Krypton-85 in the Detection of Intracardiac Left-to-right Shunts.

چکیده
ANUMBER of methods have been developed for detecting left-to-right shunts during cardiac catheterization of which the most frequently employed is determining the difference in oxygen saturations. This method has limited application in the presence of small shunts, however, since the minimal changes are often within the error of this method.' Therefore, other more sensitive technics have been employed including the use of radioactive gases, dye dilutions,2 3 hydrogen ion-platinum electrode systems,4' and cineangiocardiography. Braunwald's group initially employed nitrous oxide for the detection of intracardiac shunts6 and then developed a method for the detection of left-to-right shunts using krypton-85. 8 It was found that this gas could be the basis for a sensitive screening test and could also localize such shunts. It is the purpose of the present study to report the results in 175 patients in whom krypton-85 was employed for the detection of intracardiac shunts.

A New Sensitive Technic for the Detection of Small Cardiac Shunts
0NE of the difficult problems in cardiac catheterization is the identification and localization of small left-to-right shunts. This is particularly trying with small residual shunts following intracardiac surgery. It is recognized that standard oximetry, indicator-dilution curves with injection into the right heart, and right-sided angiocardiography are not sensitive enough to identify small le...

متن کاملExperience with Hydrogen as an Indicator of Left-to-right Shunts.
Detection of intracardiac shunts by means of conventional oximetry, dye dilution curves, nitrous oxide, or krypton gas tests, may be hampered by lack of sensitivity of the method, cost, or complexity of equipment and unreliability of the results. The hydrogen technique proposed by Clark and Bargeron (1959a, b) and Bargeron, Clark, and McArthur (1960) seems to obviate these disadvantages. The fo...
متن کاملContrast Enhanced Echocardiography for Detection of Intrapulmonary Shunts in Liver Transplant Candidates
Background: Intrapulmonary vascular abnormalities associated with liver cirrhosis may result in intrapulmonary right-to-left shunt and hypoxemia. The aim of this study was to use contrast enhanced echocardiography to detect intrapulmonary vascular abnormalities in patients with liver cirrhosis candidates for liver transplantation. Methods: One hundred and two adult patients underwent contrast e...
متن کاملThe krypton85 inhalation test for the detection of left-to-right shunts.
One of the primary reasons for performing cardiac catheterization in patients known to have, or suspected of having, congenital heart disease is to determine whether a left-to-right shunt is present and the site at which it enters the right side of the heart. Although a variety of techniques for the detection of such shunts has been developed (Wood et al., 1957, 1958; Zimmerman, 1959; Braunwald...
